The interior of
Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
Brunei-Muara, with
an area 570 square kilometers, may be the smallest
of Brunei's four districts but it is here in Brunei
Muara that locates the site of the capital city,
Bandar Seri Begawan, and the seat of government
and commerce. The capital is named after His
Majesty's late father, Sultan Haji Omar Ali
Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, who in 1967
abdicated in favor of his son and assumed the
title 'Seri Begawan'.
Yet most locals
refer to their capital simply as Bandar, the
Malay word for a major seaport or city. Among
the many places of interest in Brunei Muara and
famous tourist attractions in Brunei Muara are
the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampung Ayer,
the Royal Regalia Building, the Brunei History
Centre, the Lapau and the Dewan Majlis, Tasek
Lama Recreational Park, Tamu Kianggeh, the
Istana Nurul Aman, the Gadong Area, the Jame'
Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque and the Jerudong
Area.
