With its soaring minarets and golden dome, the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque (also known as Masjid Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien) is an oasis of tranquility within the bustle of downtown Bandar Seri Begawan (Bandar). Completed in 1958, it is built of Italian marble, gold mosaic and English stained glass, but with craftsmanship that reflects classical Islamic architecture has since become the most photographed tourist attraction and landmark in Brunei.

Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien is regarded as the architect of modern Brunei. It was he who steered the nation safely through the turbulent years following World War II, establishing the foundation for the nation's independence and sovereignty.

 

Beside this Sultan Omar Ali Mosque and anchored in a lagoon is a replica of a 16th century mahligai, or royal barge, where religious ceremonies such as Holy Quran readings were staged during the 1960s and early 1970s. Visitors may go inside the mosque but are asked to leave their shoes before entering and to exercise due consideration for those people who are praying. Woman are advised to cover their heads and dress conservatively.

 

Visiting hours :-

Sunday to Wednesday: 8.00am to 12.00pm, 2.00pm - 3.00pm and 5.00pm - 6.00pm

 

The mosque is closed to non-Muslims on Thursdays. It is opened on Saturday provided that thee is no official function the following day.
