Photo: Apsara carvings on the
Terrace of the Leper King
Located at the
northwest section of the Royal Square in Angkor
Thom is
the Terrace of the Leper King. This Leper King
Terrace is built by Jayavarman VII using the
Bayon design. Found
standing on the top of the platform is a
sculpture of a Khmer king who is believed to
have died of leprosy and this is where its name
is taken from. One scene not to be missed by
visitors are the carvings of seated apsara,
which are known as the dancing girls or
celestial nymph, on the front retaining walls.
The aspara carvings seen here in Angkor are
simply unique and incredible.
