Located in Svay Leu
district, 50 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap province,
Kulen Mountain is a historical, cultural and
natural resort which was established during the
Angkorian period by King Jayavarman II in the
9th century. It was named then as
Mahendraparvata and dedicated to the Hindu God,
Siva. Located northeast of Seam Reap, near
Banteay Srei, the locals come here for a soak
around the scenic waterfall. During the
weekends, you will see Khmers pilgrims visiting
the temple which is located on the top of the
mountain.
During the reign of
King Ang Chan I in the 16th century, the city
Mahendraparvata became a worshipping place for
the Theravada Buddhism. Recently, the resort has
not only become a place of worship but also a
cultural, historical and natural tourism resort.
It is well known as a sacred place of the Khmer
people. The main tourist attraction of this resort is
the River of One Thousand Lingas or Kulen
Waterfall.
