Unlike other temples in Angkor, Ta Prohm, built using Bayon design, is surrounded by thick layers of jungle and this place is one of the major tourist attraction in the Angkor area. It is one of the largest temples and also one of the most attractive temples in Angkor. It was built by King Jayavarman VII from the mid-12th century to the early 13th century. Its location is at the eastern section of Angkor Thom and on the southern part of East Baray. It is recognizable by visitors because of the trees growing out of the ruins and the roots of the silk cotton tree covering its wall. Ta Prohm has the basic Khmer temple design with five rectangular enclosing walls around a central sanctuary and it is oriented to the east.

This temple was dedicated to Buddhism and has become a 'must visit' temple on visitors' itinerary. Inside this tree roots covered monument are a maze of narrow corridors and crumbling stonework. Movies such as Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, and Two Brothers have been filmed here.
