Hutongs in Beijing, ChinaThe Hutong is a kind of lane lined on both sides by courtyard containing compound houses. Most of these fascinating alleyways criss-cross east-west across the city . The Hutongs (narrow alleyways) in Beijing cover about one third of the area of Beijing and half of Beijing's population live in hutongs. These passageways were originally built in the Mongol Yuan dynasty and was later redesigned with hutongs by the Qing dynasty.

 

If you take a tour of the hutongs in Beijing on a tricycle starting from the southern entrance of Qianhai Xijie, you can visit the residences of former princes, compounds for ordinary people, temples, former residences of celebrities, view the ordinary people's life, taste delicious food at a resident's home and have a chat with local people within three hours. Historic hutongs are protected by the Beijing Cultural Relics Protection Association. Hutong is an unique attraction in Beijing.

Transport: Visitors can go to the rear gate of the Beihai Park by bus Nos. 13, 107, 111, 701, 810 and 820 and then walk 200 m to the north.
