Standing imposingly on the south of Tiananmen Square, Qian Men (also known as the Front Gate) guarded the wall division between the Inner City and the outer suburban area in ancient times. It is actually made up of two gates namely the Arrow Tower (Jian Lou) on its south and the Zhengyang Men (also known as Zhengyang Gate or Cheng Lou) on its north. The huge front gate in Beijing was built in the 15th century during the reign of Emperor Yongle. Although the city walls have long collapsed, the gate by itself has become a famous attraction for tourists.

Opening times: 8.00am to 4.00pm
