Yuanmingyuan was a large imperial garden built in the Kangxi and Qianlong reign periods of the Qing Dynasty and enjoyed a reputation of 'having 10,000 gardens in the park'. The Yuanmingyuan Garden is made up of three main gardens notably Yuanmingyuan (Garden of Perfection and Brightness), Changchunyuan (Garden of Everlasting Spring) and Qichunyuan (Garden of Charming Scene) and this famous place is known as the garden of gardens to the locals.

Later the park was destroyed by the Anglo-French joint forces and the eight power allied forces. The ruins of the Yuanmingyuan was then listed as an important historical and cultural site. It is now under state protection and opened to the public. All the land that falls into the planning protection scope of the ruins of Yuanmingyuan has been reclaimed by the state and later, the State Education Commission has appointed Yuanmingyuan as the State Patriotic Education Base for the young. Other attractions located in the park include the Fancy Island Zoo, Huanghuazhen Restaurant and the Palace Gate Fast Food Restaurant.
