Situated in the center of Beijing, Tiananmen (Tian'anmen) Square, the creation of Chairman Mao, is the largest city central square in the world with an area of 440,000 sq m. This incredible square have a length of 500 m from east to west and 880 m from north to south. Tiananmen Gate (Gate of the Heavenly Peace) was the front gateway of the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties, where imperial edicts were made public. The inauguration ceremony of the People's Republic of China was held here on 1st October 1949 and this famous landmark in China can accommodate over one million people.

 

At sunrise, a flag raising ceremony is performed by the PLA soldiers drilled to marched exactly 108 paces per minute while a reverse ceremony is performed at sunset and it is important to take note that bicycles are not to be ridden across Tiananmen Square. An astonishing view of the square can be seen from the Tiananmen gate-tower. This famous square has the National Museum of China on its east, the Great Hall of the People on its west, and the Monument to the People's Heroes and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall on its south. 

 

Admission: There is no admission fees charged but an entrance ticket to the Tiananmen Gate-tower costs 15 yuan

 

Transport: Public bus Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 10, 17, 20, 22, 44, 48, 52, 53, 54, 57, 59, 66, 110, 120, 802, 307, 803, 808, 819, 922, Te 1, Te 4 and Te 7 go directly to Tiananmen Square. Tourists can also take the subway to Tiananmen Square.
