DUJIANGYAN IRRIGATION SYSTEM IN CHENGDU

SICHUAN , CHINA

Standing tall 49 kilometers from the city of Chengdu, lies the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. This oldest water-conservancy project (also known as the Dujiangyan Dam Irrigation Project) in China was built during the reign of Emperor Zhao of Qin by famed engineer Li Bing and was subsequently completed by Li Bing's son, Er Lang. It was built to divert the fast-flowing Min He into irrigation canals. A barrier was built to divide the force of the river and a trunk canal was cut through a mountain to irrigate the Chengdu plain. The Dragon Subduing Temple which displays some historical photographs to remember this occasion was built in Solitude Park. Visitors have the opportunity to see a statue of Li Bing at the Two Kings Temple and can enjoy a relaxing cable ride that runs from the Solitude Park to this temple and then to the Jade Wall Hall Park (Shan Gongyuan). This famous tourist attraction in Chengdu is one of the busiest place in Sichuan.

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is recognized as a major landmark in the development of water management and technology and this dam in Chengdu is still discharging its function properly. At the end of 2000, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System was classified under the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
