BAODING MOUNTAIN STONE CARVINGS IN CHONGQING

CHINA

Located 15 kilometers northeast of the seat of Dazu County, the cliff-side stone carvings in Baoding were first constructed in the sixth year of the Chunxi reign period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1179). The sculptures at Baoding Shan (Treasured Summit Hill) are popular among tourists whereby the sculptures took more than seventy years to complete. The highlight at the Baoding Stone Carvings is definitely the thirty over meters long reclining Buddha with a gold statue of the Goddess of Mercy seen next to it. Baoding Shan is unique in the sense that unlike the other grottoes, it is based on a well thought up plan which uses some of the area's natural features like the underground spring. With Dafowan as the center, there are numerous stone statues in the surrounding areas. Those found in Dafowan are the largest and the best preserved with the highest artistic value but the Dazu Rock Carvings seen here at Baoding Mountain remains the most famous attraction in this region.
