WOODEN PAGODA IN DATONG (MU TA IN DATONG)

SHANXI , CHINA

The Wooden Pagoda, built in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125), is found in Fogong Temple in Yingxian County. It is 63 meters high and the nine-storey pagoda is built with wood except for the base which is made of stone and the amazing thing about this structure is that not a single nail was used in the construction of this spectacular structure. Each storey has the inner and outer rings of pillar which are linked by irregular methods. The wooden pagoda is ancient, unadorned, solemn and yet graceful and this 11th century pagoda is believed to be one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world.
