MOGAO CAVES IN DUNHUANG

This famous tourist attraction, located 25 kilometers southeast of Dunhuang City and lying at the foot of Mingsha Mountain, the Mogao Caves (Mogao Ku) in Dunhuang, which is 1,680 meters from south to north, has more than 700 caves of which 492 caves hold more than 2,000 painted sculptures and 45,000 square meters of murals. Most of the art found here are from the Northern and Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui and Tang dynasties while the caves are mostly rectangular with recessed, decorated ceilings. There are 5 grottoes with a wooden structure. Mogao Caves is the largest, oldest and the most well preserved Buddhist ruins with the richest contents in the world today. It is included under the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

 

Admission: 80 yuan

 

Transport: Visitors may get there by catching a taxi since there is bus service to Mogao Caves. Passengers will be charged 10 yuan for a return trip.
