LOTUS MOUNTAIN SCENIC ZONE IN GUANGZHOU

The rocks in the mountain are in the shape of lotus flowers, hence the name of the mountain is given as the Lotus Mountain in Guangzhou. This famous mountain used to be an old Ming dynasty quarry site and is also known as the Lianhua Shan to the locals. The ancient quarries in Lotus Mountain are historical monuments under state protection.

 

In the mountain, visitors can also find a Lotus Pagoda built in 1612 (the 40th year of the Wangli reign period of the Ming Dynasty) which is known as the memorial column of the capital of Guangdong Province; the Lotus City together with the Lianhua Ta (Old Lotus Tower) was built in 1664 (the third year of the Kangxi reign period of the Qing Dynasty) and the golden statue of Goddess of Mercy was set up in 1994. The statue is 40.88 meters high, weighs 120 tons and it is coated with 180 liang of gold. This is the largest statue of the Goddess of Mercy in the world.
