QIXIA MOUNTAIN IN NANJING

JIANGSU , CHINA

Qixia Mountain, 22 kilometers northeast of Nanjing, was known as the Sheshan Mountain in ancient times, which was renamed Qixia Mountain (or Qixia Shan) because 'Qixia Cottage' of Southern and Northern dynasties (420-581) was located in the mountain.

The mountain has three peaks. The East Peak resembles a dragon and the West Peak looks like a tiger and hence the names Dragon Hill and Tiger Hill. The main peak is named as Sanmao Peak or Fengxiang Peak, with an elevation of 286 meters. Visitors can find Qixia Temple (Morning of Birds Temple) and other Buddhist cultural sites in the mountain, as well as dense forests, limpid streams, and tall and elegant rocks. The Qixia Temple was founded by a Buddhist monk named Ming Sengshao  and it has two main halls namely the Maitreya Hall and the Vairocana Hall. Seen behind this temple is the Thousand Buddha Cliff and a stone pagoda called Sheli Ta. Because of its picturesque scenery, it is labeled as the 'No.1 Exquisite Mountain in Nanjing'.
