Getting around from
one place to another in Shanghai is relatively
easy. There are good transportation in Shanghai.
Shanghai is the only city in China having two
international airports. It has brought in more
than 300 airlines to the big and medium-sized
cities in China and also to important cities in
more than 20 countries and regions in the world.
Shanghai Hongqiao
International Airport is situated in the western
part of the city and is 13 km away from the
People's Square in downtown area. As one of
China's large international airports, Shanghai's
Hongqiao Airport has established a multi-function
and multi-tier service network.
Shanghai Pudong
International Airport is located in Pudong New
Area. Covering an area of 40 sq km, the Pudong
Airport is roughly 30 km away from the downtown
area and is 40 km away from the Shanghai Hongqiao
International Airport. It will become one of the
aviation centers in the world.

By Rail
Another useful mode
of transport in Shanghai is to travel by trains.
Shanghai connects with all artery railways through
Beijing-Shanghai and Shanghai-Hangzhou railway
lines. Everyday some 80 pairs of trains depart
from or arrive at the city and the rail service
is quite efficient.

Transport Facilities
Public Buses
Shanghai boasts some
1,000 public bus routes which makes traveling by
road easier. Public buses are the most ordinary
traffic facilities in Shanghai. In urban areas
the traffic fee for public buses costs 1 to 1.5
yuan in general while that for air-conditioned
coaches is 2 to 3 yuan. The traffic fee for special
routes is based on the distance covered.
Subways
Subway Line 1 was
completed and put into use in April 1995. It is
21.51 km long with 16 stations. It passes
through Nanjing Road, People's Square, Huaihai
Road, Xujiahui and other shopping areas.
Subway Line 2 was
put into operationn in August 2000. It is 27.03
km long, departing from the Hongqiao
International Airport and terminating at
Longyanglu Station via Beixinjing, Zhongshan
Park, Jing'ansi, People's Square, Lujiazui and
Dongchang Road.
Shanghai Mass
Transit Pearl Line
The first overhead
railway line occurred in Chinese mainland when
the first-phase project of Shanghai Mass Transit
Pearl Line began. This line is from Caohejing in
southwest Shanghai to Jiangwan town in northeast
Shanghai. It is 25 km long and have 19 stations.
Magnetic
Suspended Train
The magnetic
suspended train project was first being built in
March 2001 and it went into trial operation on
the 1st January 2003. This line is 33
km long and starts at Longyang Road Station of
the Subway Line 2 and ends at the Pudong
International Airport. It takes only 7.5
minutes and costs 150 to 300 yuan for a
round-trip ticket during the trail operation.
Taxis
Taxis are available
around the clock at the international airports,
railway stations, passenger docks, hotels,
scenic spots and amusement centers in Shanghai
with the starting price of 10 yuan. The taxi fee
is increased by 30% during the period from
11.00pm in the evening to 5.00am next early
morning. Each taxi has installed taximeter.
Shanghai Tourist
Service Center
The center provides
various preferential set tickets including
round-trip tickets and admissions to scenic
spots and services relating to accommodation in
some scenic spots. On the tourist coaches guides
will make introduce to the scenic spots along
the trip.
The center has
developed some 60 itineraries and dispatches
some 400 buses to various scenic spots on the
outskirts and neighboring provinces and cities.

services have become new choices by tourists for
their outings. Tourists can drive the cars by

Passenger
Transportation on Water
Shanghai Harbor is
an important transportation port for entering
and exiting the city as well as a water
passenger transport hub in east China. Also it
is China's only sea, river and inland river
passenger transportation port. Shanghai Harbor
is now composed of the Shiliupu, Gongpinglu and
Waihongqiao passenger stations. The ferry
service is used widely by both the locals and
tourists.
