Photo: Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang in Xian
The Mausoleum of
Emperor Qin Shihuang (Qin Shihuang Tomb) in Xian,
first emperor of China, is at the northern foot
of Lishan Mountain. Yin Zheng ascended the throne
of the state of Qin when he was only thirteen years
old. He then assumed the title 'Shihuang' or First
Emperor. Located about 5 km east of Lintong, soon
after Qin Shihuang came to power in 246 B.C., he
started to build this spectacular tomb. He managed
to unify China in 221 B.C. and also standardized
the currency and written script. He was also
infamously known for purges and mass-book-burning
parties.
The huge Qin Shihuang
mausoleum in Xian is famous for its rich treasury
of jewels and other precious objects at home and
abroad. Qin Shihuang was buried here in 209 B.C.
and currently this Qin mausoleum is surrounded
by two rows of white poplar trees and steps were
built from the road to the top of the mausoleum
for easier access to this historical place. In
1961, the Tomb of Qin Shihuang was included in
the list of national cultural sites under the
state protection and in 1987, it was classified
under the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.
