GULANGYU ISLAND IN XIAMEN

Separated from the downtown area by the 500 meters wide Lujiang River, the famous attraction of Gulangyu Island in Xiamen covers an area of 1.77 square kilometers and is known as a 'garden on the sea'. This place of interest in Xiamen has a population of 20,000 and this tranquil island is made up mostly of winding paths, Christian cemeteries and colonial buildings. The local people here love music and this island leads the country in the possessing rate of pianos, so the island is praised as the piano island. Its main scenic spot is the Sunlight Rock which is the highest point on the island at over 90 meters. Seen at the foot of the Sunlight Rock is the Koxinga Memorial Hall (Zheng Chenggong Memorial Hall) which has an exhibition partly dedicated to the Dutch in Taiwan. Both of these tourist attractions are located at the Sunlight Rock Park (Riguang Yan Gongyuan). Other places of interest in Gulangyu Island include the Shuzhuang Garden and the Gangzihou Bathing Beach. Each year it attracts millions of local and foreign visitors. The Xiamen Seaworld with its remarkable collection of dolphins, penguins and seals can be seen near the ferry terminal.

 

Transport: It can be reached by boat from Lundu Dock. There are regular buses from various places in the city to the dock.
