Traveling by air is
not as complicated as it used to nowadays since
the majority of all airlines are now geared
towards catering for disabled fliers, however,
to be on the safe side, whenever there is a
choice of airlines, it is advisable to know
their policy and attitude towards carrying
disabled people, the facilities they have for
disabled travelers - both on the ground and in
the air, the type of aircraft - being
comfortable is important and special types of
seats are being made, the availability of
special diets and the method of boarding and
disembarking. Flying with disability is so
much easier nowadys.
It is essential to
know that the time of day for traveling is
important to someone with a disability and also
check out whether it is a non-stop flight or one
which requires stopovers. It is also advisable
to contact the relevant airport to get further
advice about air travel for disabled people, for
example, each United Kingdom airport provides
details of the services that they offer to
disabled travelers. Details of facilities and
services for disabled people at over 280
airports in 40 different countries can be found
in 'Access Travel : Airport' which is published
by the US Department of Transportation.
Please remember to
confirm the arrangements for checking in and
boarding. Also take note that equal care is
required at the end of the journey and make sure
that the airport transfer arrangements are
appropriate and the disabled traveler must keep
note of the telephone numbers needed to confirm
arrangements for the homeward trip. Should there
be a change in the time, airline or airport,
always check the new arrangements for their
suitability. With careful planning, flying with
a disability will not bring about any obstacle to
your journey.
