Image Sensors In Digital Cameras

The image sensor works like the film on a normal camera. When the shutter is opened, light strikes the sensor and a snapshot of the image is captured. There are two types of image sensors. The more popular and used by most are the charge-coupled device (CCD) due to its superior image quality. The higher-end digital cameras will have two or three CCDs. The more CCDs, the better it is. The second type is the complementary metal oxide semi-conductor (CMOS) technology which is newer and cheaper to produce compared to the CCD. The quality of the image may not be up to par with the CCD but it is slowly getting there and has become available in higher-end cameras. However, when choosing a digital camera, it is advised to put quality of the lens ahead of the image sensors because that will have a greater effect on the outcome of the pictures.
