A demand valve,
which is also commonly known as a diving regulator, is
one of your more important diving gear that you
must remember to bring along in your holidays.
If you plan to dive only occasionally in warm
water during your trip, then you can just take
with you the basic regulator with is simple to
use use, hardly malfunction and it can stand up
to a lot of abuse. But keep in mind that basic
regulators do not produce a large amount of air
on demand, have few low-pressure ports and have
a fixed single-size yoke-connector.
Instead of choosing
the basic regulators, you may choose to bring
your other more expensive regulators which will
have low-pressure ports for inflating buoyancy
compensator devices (BCDs), dry suits or power
tools and an additional second stage (octopus
rig) which will easily supply the extra air
required by these low-pressure ports and hence
supply a large quantity of air on demand.
A standard unit is a
single hose two stage regulator whereby the term
single hose refers to the basic breathing unit
while two stage refers to the air pressure in
the scuba cylinder being reduced in two stages
to reach the pressure at which the diver
breathes it. A recommended way to look after
your diving regulators is to wash them with fresh water
while it is connected to the scuba cylinder
valve with the air pressure still turned on.
