Scuba cylinders are
the most important diving gear that you will need
when going for a diving adventure because this
is where your air is kept when you are underwater. Basically
there are two types of scuba cylinders. The
first type are steel scuba cylinders which can
be be more resistant to abrasion damage and they
come in round bases. Another
plus point is that they have good buoyancy
characteristics but substantially care is needed
to keep them in good working order since they
may rust both inside and outside.
The second type is the aluminium
scuba cylinders which can be more easily
damaged by abrasion and require thicker walls to
take the same internal pressure as steel
cylinders and they come in flat bases. They are heavier compared to steel
cylinders but are more positively buoyant when
weigh against the same capacity of a steel
cylinder. Sometimes divers prefer aluminium
cylinders despite the fact that aluminium
corrodes the same way as steel rusts but the
thin coating of aluminium oxide formed actually
prevents continuous corrosion. Scuba cylinders
come in sizes ranging from six to eighteen
litres water capacity and they come in various
lengths to suit each diver's height and divers
also have the choice of using a single large
cylinder as opposed to a twin set.
