Breathing is
probably the most important aspect of scuba
diving. If you keep on having to put your head
out of the water to breath when swimming to a
dive site, then you are
definitely doing something very wrong.
Therefore, do not forget to bring your diving snorkels
with you should you decide that scuba diving
will be part of your itinerary when you are
traveling. Snorkels will allow you to breath
comfortably on the surface without having to
raise your head out of the water and will also let you
preserve the air in your scuba cylinder while
swimming to a dive site or back to the point of
entry.
A few crucial points
that you need to know about snorkels are firstly
you must always choose the design that suits you best.
There are many types of snorkels. Keep in mind that large-bore models with an
internal diameter of twenty-five millimeters are
the ones that allow you to breathe through the
easiest. For divers who are small in size, a
narrower bore snorkel is preferred because it
will be easier to clear and it has a smaller
mouthpiece. Always make sure that the angle of
the mouthpiece must be comfortable in your
mouth. You may choose to bring along snorkels
that have a self-draining barrel or mouthpiece
which is actually a one-way valve that permits
gravity to drain the portion of the barrel that
is clear of the water. You should know that when a
snorkel is in use, it is attached by a retaining
clip to the mask strap or slipped between the
mask strap and the diver's head.
