Buying and choosing
essential oils in aromatherapy is a technique
you must master before applying aromatherapy
in your daily routine. Carefully selecting
your essential oils is vital because they are
the major ingredients in aromatherapy. How to
choose essential oils? The most important
thing to know is that always choose only pure
essential oils. Eventhough scientists have
managed to create quite lifelike aromas in
the laboratory but these substances are made
from petroleum by-products and not from plants.
To show you their
ineffectiveness in aromatherapy, you should know
that in each essential oil are dozens of
chemical compounds whereby many of which are
present in only trace amounts. Synthetic scents
may copy the smell but they can never replicate
the exact molecular makeup of healing essential
oils. Always be aware of the 'nature-identical'
labels which are shown on the products. If it
does not mention 'pure essential oil', try to
give it a miss. Another thing to follow is
always to trust your nose. If you do not like
the smell of an essential oil, chances is that
it is unlikely to help you even if it is
recommended by your aromatherapist. Try to
choose another recommended oil that is more
pleasing to you.
Where to buy
essential oils and what are the things to
consider before buying essential oils? It
is essential to consider the source and if
possible, try to buy only from reputable
suppliers in which well-established natural
food stores are a good place to go. If you
are not sure, consult a qualified aromatherapist
for suggestions.
Another criteria
when buying essential oils is to consider the
price. It is known that some manufacturers
dilute essential oils with carrier oils or mix
them with synthetics, without labeling them as
such. To overcome this problem, try to place a
drop of pure essential oil placed on a tissue.
It will evaporate completely without leaving
any trace of oil if the oil is pure. If a
greasy spot is left behind, the oil would have
certainly been adulterated.
There are also ways
to tell the difference without even opening the
bottle. The prices of true essential oils vary
widely. The reason is due to the difficulty of
extracting the pure plant oils from their host
plants. Rose oil is known to be more expensive
than lavender oil because many pounds of rose
petals are required to make just one ounce of
rose oil. Be careful if a manufacturer sells
all of its oils for the same price. Also if the
prices are substantially lower than those of
other manufacturers, the probability that the
products are adulterated or inferior become
more.
