Wanasato Onsen is a
very popular place to visit to experience a
traditional Japanese spa. Wanasato, known as
the Japanese Country Village, is about less than
half-an-hour drive south of Takayama. The view
around Wanasato is simply magnificent as it is
nestled in the snowy mountains of the Japan Alps
in the northern part of Gifu. To come here,
travel using the Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo
to Nagoya Station and then proceed to Takayama
Station using the local train service. From
there, catch a cab to Wanasato. Because of its
remote location, this place remains one of the
most preserved area in Japan whereby you can
witness sake breweries, Photo: Wanasato at Gigu
in Japan merchant house and shops
from the Edo Period.
Built from a
collection of old farmhouses from Kamioka, Gifu,
the most sought after rooms here are the ones
overlooking the spectacular Miya River. One
thing unique about these houses is that it is
called the gassho-zukuri houses due to its
especially steep-sloped roofs which are thatched
with about three foot thick miscanthus, which is
a type of pampas grass. All the eight rooms here
have private bathrooms together with two grand
indoor wooden onsen with refreshing scenery of
lush green trees in which the forest tranquility
will surely invigorate you while you are
indulging in a perfect Japanese spa experience
in the indoor hot springs.
The best time to visit this part of Japan is
during the spring and autumn festivals whereby
activities area aplenty.
