Bankyu Ryokan Onsen, first
built in 1666, is one of the most oldest and
well preserved ryokan in this region. Located
deep in the forest and has more than three
hundred years of history, it is a place surrounded by
tranquil atmosphere whereby the Ban family name
is held with high esteem in this area and this
place is a popular onsen resort and is also well
known for its hot spring baths. To get to
this place, it is a 120 minutes journey from
Tobu Asakusa to Yunishigawa Onsen Station by
Tobu Aizu-kinugawa line and then travel in a bus
for about half-an-hour to Yunishigawa.
The honke of the ban
family is a descendant of Taira no Kiyomori, a
great ruler during the Heian Period. This
wonderful weekend escape destination for
visitors to rejuvenate is located in the
Yunishigawa Village, near the Nikko National
Park which is unmatched in its beauty as a
natural wonderland of rivers lakes and wooded
highlands. Besides enjoying a hot spring water
bath, tourists will also have a
chance to visit the Toshogu Shrine which is
dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the
Tokugawa Shogunate. Together with the Futarasan

and unique architectural structures were designated under
the World Cultural Heritage in 1999. The major attraction
here in Bankyu Ryokan is the three rooms
equipped with private onsen baths with stunning
view. Also found here are three outdoor onsen
and three additional private family-sized
rotenburo. For those who prefer to stay inside,
there are also four indoor onsen. All the
forty-five rooms here beautiful decorated with
traditional Japanese art. The best time to visit
will be during the month of June when the
residents here celebrate the Yume-hotaru
Festival (Great Heike
Festival), Heike Ochiudo Taisai. Colorful
processions will light up this quite and
peaceful place and together with a perfect
Japanese spa experience, your trip here will
definitely be worthwhile. This place is full of
beautifully colored leaves in autumn while it is
covered in white snow in winter.
