Formerly known as
Edo Castle, the Imperial Palace is still being
surrounded by its original innermost moat.
Regarded as one of the most popular tourist
attractions in Japan, you can see handsome gates and old guard towers set at
intervals around the grounds. The main entrance
is approached by the graceful Nijubashi Bridge
(Double Bridge) and during special occasions it
will be open to the public.
Whatever that is
left of the central keep of the old Edo Castle
can be seen in the East Garden (Higashi Gyoen).
The garden is open to the public as an ideal
place for relaxation and for them to appreciate
the flowers and blossoms of each season.
Art works of the
20th century can be seen at the National Museum
of Modern Art while the Science Museum, a
five-storey building, houses three-dimensional
displays of exhibits covering all fields of
modern science ranging from agriculture to space
science. The Kitanomaru Park, with an extensive
garden with a path running through it, is
located next to the two museums. Tourists will
definitely want to stroll along the
Chidorigafuchi, a park around the moat of the
Imperial Palace, to look at the beauty of cherry
blossoms during spring.
