KAMAKURA - TOKYO

HISTORICAL TOWN

JAPAN

A small quiet coastal town with serene temples is can be found after an hour journey by train from Tokyo. Kamakura, once the seat of the feudal government set up in  1192, still manages to retain much of its ancient and historical heritage. The most recommended way to enjoy a tour of Kamakura is by self exploration. There are five famous temples in Kamakura  and a leisurely stroll here takes you back to the 12th century Kamakura period. Engakuji Temple, founded in 1282, is a temple built to commemorate the deaths of both Japanese and Mongolian soldiers killed during the Mongol's attempt to invade Japan.

Another attraction here is the Kenchoji Temple which features a Chinese layout. The temple was founded in 1253. Near the Kamakura Station is the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine which gives a spectacular view of the city of Kamakura from the Hongu (main building). Tourists will surely remember this spectacular view forever. The Kamakura Museum of National Treasures displays more than 2,000 treasures belonging to Kamakura temples and the items on exhibits are changed monthly.

However, the most famous attraction here is the giant bronze Great Buddha. Known for its wooden principal building and a striking Japanese garden, the Hasedera Temple is one of the most beautiful temples in Kamakura. Another place of interest worth mentioning is Enoshima Island  which is a small island with a perimeter of 4 kilometers that protrudes into the Sagami Bay.
