NIKKO - TOKYO

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE

JAPAN

Traveling two hours by train from Tokyo will take you to Nikko, a place famous for its natural beauty and home to one of the must-sees of Japanese architecture. In 1999, it was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Nikko's main tourist attraction is its Toshogu Shrine which was completed in 1636 and was dedicated to the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. The majority of the shrine buildings found here are designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties.

The Shinkyo Bridge (Sacred Bridge) can be seen standing gracefully over the Daiya River. Lake Chuzenji is especially stunning in early May for its cherry blossoms and in October for its crimson foliage. The Kegon Falls, a five-minute walk from the Chuzenji Onsen bus stop, is one of the most famous waterfalls in Japan. You can get close to the base of the waterfall by elevator. Another fifteen-minute walk will bring you to Chuzenji Temple. Here you have the chance to view the famous One-Thousand-Armed Goddess.
