YANAKA, NEZU AND HONGO - TOKYO

YANAKA, NEZU AND HONGO

JAPAN

Yanaka and Nezu area is a sloping maze of streets and alleys close to the Nippori Station. Other than the many temples located here, there are also many classic coffee shops, a tofu factory, tatami weavers, an old cemetery and small museums and galleries.

Close to JR Nippori Station, 'Yanaka Ginza' is an old-fashioned 150 meters shopping promenade crowded with nearly 70 small shops. The Asakura Chouso Museum is the former studio-residence of Asakura Fumio (1883-1964), the father of modern Japanese sculpture. His major works are effectively installed in the beautiful building and garden. Space Oguraya, formerly a pawn-broker shop, has been reborn as a gallery of contemporary art.

The Nezu Shrine, a grand shrine established 1,900 years ago, has been designated as Japan's Important Cultural Property. Tourists can view over 2,800 works of the popular Romantic poet-and-artist (1884-1934) at the Takehisa Yumeji Museum. The Hongo area will greet visitors at the end of the trip.
