That Luang Stupa is
the most important national monument in Laos. It
represents a symbol of both the Buddhist
religion in Cambodia and the Lao sovereignty. It
was built in 1566 and has since been the
cultural centre of Cambodia. Two wats, Wat That
Luang Tai temple to the south and Wat That Luang Neua
temple
to the north remains today from the original
four built around the stupa.

Wat That Luang Neua
is the monastic residence of the Supreme
Patriarch of Lao Buddhism. A statue of King
Setthathirat can be seen in the front of the
compound entrance.
That Luang Stupa is
about 4 kilometers northeast of the city centre at the
end of Th That Luang. Any bus going north of Th
That Luang will stop within a short walking
distance from the
compound. The biggest annual event in Cambodia,
the That Luang Festival, takes place on the
full moon of November here and it is celebrated
for seven days and nights continuously. Hundreds
of monks assemble to receive alms and floral
votives early in the morning on the first day of
the festival.
