This picturesque
riverine town also known as Bandar Maharani
along the coastal route, is a favorite stop-over
for travelers between Kuala Lumpur and Johor
Bahru. Muar has a character similar to Malacca
from a geographical, cultural, historical point
of view and economically, they also were of
similar importance and this reason alone has
made Muar a popular tourist destination in
Malaysia. This popular riverside town is a
typical Malaysian town with its superb Chinese
restaurants and hotels.
It is known for its
stunning sunsets and fresh seafood, and is also
the take-off point to the 1,276 meters high Gunung
Ledang (Mount Ophir), a popular hiking spot. The
less energetic prefer to stay at the base of the
mountain where waterfalls and streams offer a
refreshing break. A resort at the foothills
offers chalet-type accommodation and jungle
huts.
From Muar you can
also get to a hot spring area at Sungai Balang,
on the way to Batu Pahat. For music lovers,
tourist will be glad to know that Muar is reputed to
be the home of Ghazal music (female singers with
an orchestra), a style of
traditional Malay music and it is also the place
to witness the rare Kuda Kepang (horse trance) dance, a
traditional dance
form that is quickly disappearing. This
traditional Malay culture has its origin from
Java. Among other
famous attractions located here include some colonial style
buildings and a small beach front golf course.
