PADANG MATSIRAT - LANGKAWI

FIELD OF BURNT RICE

KEDAH - NORTH OF MALAYSIA

The Field of Burnt Rice at Padang Matsirat is another popular tourist destination. It is the site where a granary stood two hundred years ago. According to legend, Langkawi's supply of rice was burnt in order to thwart the invading Thai's and cause them to starve. The reason they burnt the granary is that they do not want the rice to fall into enemies hands. Until today, traces of burnt rice grains still appear whenever there is a heavy downpour.
