At the Pantai Pasir Hitam
(Black Sand Beach) is
a distinctive beach streaked with black sand. This place
of interest in Langkawi is found at the western sector
of Tanjung Rhu whereby the beach is only a few meters
wide and located at the foot of a five meters drop. You
might think that you have to be a rocket scientist to
explain the black sand on the beach but in actual fact,
the black streaks are due to the deposits of mineral
oxides coming from a nearby spring. The scenery here is
different to the other beaches in Kedah since this place
is dotted with large boulders.
All sizes of fishing boats
can be seen moored at the specially designed Y-shaped
jetty built along the beach. To cater for the
convenience of tourists, there are a variety of food
stalls and souvenirs shops selling traditional
handicrafts.
