Located
on the fringe of the Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens (Taman
Tasik Perdana), the National
Museum of Malaysia serves as the principal museum in the country.
This Kuala Lumpur museum was built on the site of the old Selangor
Museum. The design of this palatial building is based on the
classical Malay architecture and its main entrance is
flanked by murals that depict aspects of Malaysian
culture and history.
The various galleries in the
National Museum provide
interesting insights into Malaysian history, political development, culture, economy, arts and
flora and fauna. Located on the museum's
grounds are static displays including an original Penang
Hill Railway car, old locomotives,
vintage cars, and a replica of an ancient Malay palace
while found inside the museum are exhibits on
Malaysia's traditional weapons and currencies used in
ancient times, local history,
culture, tradition, flora and fauna. Also seen at this
famous tourist attraction are
exhibits on traditional Malaysian economic activities
such as rubber planting and tin-mining while the wayang
kulit and traditional musical instruments exhibits are
always popular with tourists. International
exhibits on different culture are also being held here
on a regular basis.
