Photo: A' Famosa, the famous Portuguese fort

The hallmark of Malacca and perhaps and the most photographed subject next to the Stadthuys. Built by the Portuguese in 1511 as a fortress it sustained severe structural damage during the Dutch invasion, however visitors has the chance to see the entrance to what was once an imposing structure that defended the city from attack. To get to this popular place of interest in Melaka, take the steps from St. Paul's Church down the hill to A' Formosa The Dutch had set to destroy it but timely intervention by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1808 saved what remains of A' Famosa today and has become a main tourist attraction here in Malacca. The canons built here suffered great damaged although some of the fortifications were being restored. Tourists will be able to see the Dutch East India Company's coat of arms being inscribed on the fort here.
