CHINATOWN - MALACCA (MELAKA)

CHINATOWN

SOUTH OF MALAYSIA

The Chinatown in Melaka is both a busy and popular tourist area. Located on the western part of the Malacca River, this place of interest is a remarkable place for visitors to explore and do their shopping. Seen surrounded by its narrow, winding streets are traditional and remarkable shop houses, interesting temples and mosques. Walking along these winding roads will surely bring back memories of the old Melaka during the colonial rule.

The most interesting feature here are the Peranakan (Straits Chinese) shophouses which display intricate tiles and plasterworks. Other interesting places to see in Chinatown include the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, Chee Mansion which is located near the Baba House, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Jalan Hang Jebat, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock which was the road where most of the rich Baba traders lived in the early 20th century, Kampung Hulu Mosque, Kampung Hulu Mosque and Sri Poyatha Venayagar Moorthi Temple which was dedicated to the elephant-headed Hindu deity Ganesh. Visitors can even take a relaxing boat ride down the scenic Malacca River from Chinatown.
