NEGERI SEMBILAN

CENTRAL REGION OF PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

Sri Menanti Royal Museum (Sri Menanti Old Palace) in Negeri SembilanNegeri Sembilan, translated literally as 'nine states', is so called because it once consisted of nine separate districts, each ruled by a Malay chieftain prior to British administration. It is locally known as N.S. or 'Land of the Minangkabau Tradition'. Seremban, its capital city is well-connected by road and rail to Kuala Lumpur (KL), fifty kilometers away. It houses a cultural handicraft complex, the State Museum, the grand State Mosque and the beautiful Lake Gardens. The tourists attractions seen here are different to those found in the other places of Malaysia.

The state is often identified with the pervasive influence of Minangkabau migrants from Sumatra as seen in the unique horn-shaped roofs of many of its buildings. The Minangkabaus who brought with them their 'adat' or traditions, are also credited with many aspects of life in Negeri Sembilan, in particular the matrilineal kinship system. This system is evident until today especially in the marriage customs, ownership of property and dance forms.

Cape Rachado Lighthouse in Tanjung Tuan, Negari SembilanThe Sri Menanti Palace, converted to the Royal Museum in 1992, is a classic showcase of Minangkabau structure and design whereby Sri Menanti is the royal town. Built at the turn of the century by two local craftsmen, the famous tourist attraction took six years to complete and is an architectural wonder as no screws or nails were used in its buildings. Visitors who have the chance to witness this unique structure will be totally amazed by its design.

Elsewhere, pretty village settings are reminiscent of the and therefore it is not a surprise that Negeri Sembilan is always recognized with the pervasive influence of the Minangkabau culture, reflected in the upswept roofs reminiscent of buffalo horns. Negeri Sembilan has a popular beach at Port Dickson, on the shores of the Straits of Malacca. This beach resort town with its miles of golden beaches and a wide range of accommodation is a favorite 'playground' for the city dwellers of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore as well as the neighboring towns and this area is packed with both locals         Cape Rachado Lighthouse

and tourists during the weekend and stalls selling food and drinks are easily available at this popular place of interest in Negeri Sembilan.
