Georgetown is located on the northeast part of Penang Island whereby this colorful, bustling capital city still retains a strong Chinese flavor with its old unique shophouses selling traditional goods and its numerous grand temples, traditional coffeeshops and busy market places. Georgetown has become a very popular travel destination in Malaysia as this beautiful city offers tourists a wide range of spectacular tourists attractions.

 

Georgetown is a compact city and most of the main tourists areas are easily seen of foot or by hiring a trishaw, a cheap mode of traditional transportation. The old colonial part of town is near Fort Cornwallis at the Esplanade while the financial centre is on Lebuh Pantai (Beach Street) which is the main street on this part of town. There are many grand colonial buildings which has been converted to banks and old trading offices, reminders of the fact that Penang was one of the oldest British settlements in Asia and the tourists have the chance to view the different types of heritage buildings built with different architectural styles.

 

Jalan Penang (Penang Road) is the main shopping district while Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street) contains many restaurants, small hotels and resthouses. For travelers on a tight budget, they will be delighted to know that there are many cheap hotels and cheap motels here providing comfortable accommodation. Many places of interest are highlighted in a walking tour that includes some temples and mosques in Chinatown and you will not miss the famous Penang hawker stalls selling local delicacies.
