The Goddess of Mercy Temple,
also known as the Kuan Yin
Temple, is one of the oldest Chinese
temples in Penang located on the Kapitan Keling Road. The Kuan Yin Teng
as it is called by the locals here in Penang was built
in 1800 by early immigrant settlers from China and this
historic place of worship is one of the most visited
temples by the Chinese communities and is now a famous
tourist attraction in Penang.
The building of this temple is
decorated with intricately crafted dragons and stone sculptured lions which are said to be its guardians.
Devotees flock to the temple all year round especially
during the three anniversaries of Kuan Yin which are on
the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth lunar
months and traditional puppet shows are held to
celebrate the birthday of the Goddess of Mercy annually.
This is one of the most famous Chinese temple in
Malaysia.
