Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Yin Temple) in Penang, MalaysiaThe Goddess of Mercy Temple, also known as the Kuan Yin Temple, is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Penang located on the Kapitan Keling Road. The Kuan Yin Teng as it is called by the locals here in Penang was built in 1800 by early immigrant settlers from China and this historic place of worship is one of the most visited temples by the Chinese communities and is now a famous tourist attraction in Penang.

 

The building of this temple is decorated with intricately crafted dragons and stone sculptured lions which are said to be its guardians. Devotees flock to the temple all year round especially during the three anniversaries of Kuan Yin which are on the 19th day of the second, sixth and ninth lunar months and traditional puppet shows are held to celebrate the birthday of the Goddess of Mercy annually. This is one of the most famous Chinese temple in Malaysia.
