A Buddhist temple of Thai
architecture along Burma Lane, it houses a 33 meters gold-plated reclining Buddha said to be one of the
longest in the world making this place a very famous
tourist attraction in Malaysia. Loads of chartered buses
are usually seen parked along the road outside the
temple bringing local tourists and as well as foreign
tourists to this important place of interest in Penang.
The niches behind the statue house
urns containing the ashes of devotees. Also found in the
gardens of the temple are a pair of spectacular stone serpents which
link the balustrades at the entrance to the interior of
the temple and many beautiful carved statues. One unique
attraction seen inside the temple are statues of the
twelve animals seen in the Chinese zodiac. Donation
boxes are carefully Reclining Buddha at Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram
being placed in front of the twelve animals for devotees
to put in some coins to wish for better health and
wealth. This
temple is full of devotees during the Wesak
celebrations.
