GOMANTONG CAVES

EAST MALAYSIA

Gomantong Caves is one of the top places of interest in Sabah which is made up of two caverns that are home to more than a million swiftlets. These famous limestone caves are located less than thirty kilometers from Sandakan and the main area here is the Simud Hitam Cave (Black Cave) in which the black bird's nests are being produced. Bird's nests are used by the Chinese to make bird's nest soup. This cave is located very near the Registration Centre. The more priceless white bird's nest are produced at the interior of the Simud Putih Cave (White Cave) complex. Using rattan ladders and bamboo poles, only licensed collectors can harvest the bird's nest twice a year. The best time to visit this tourist attraction is during the nesting season since you can view the nests being collected from the cave's roof.

Another fascinating attraction here at the caves are the unique stalactites and stalagmites which can be seen inside these caves. Their odd shapes make good photographing session. To take a day tour to this place, tourists can visit some of the local travel agents which can organized a day trip or visit the Forest Department in Sandakan since this place are quite difficult for the independent travelers to reach by themselves as the area around the caves is covered in dense vegetation.
