The Kinabatangan River (Sungai Kinabatangan) in Sabah is the state's most well known river and also a famous tourist attraction. It is the longest river in Sabah which drains a catchment area of more than sixteen thousand square kilometers. Measuring more than 550 kilometers, this magnificent river starts to flow from the mountains of central Borneo which then continues about three hundred miles eastwards into the Sulu Sea. Most wildlife lives at the lower Kinabatangan River which is roughly three hours by boat from Sandakan. This area is not suitable for farming but tourists come to this place of interest in Sabah just to catch a glimpse of the many wonderful creatures living here.

 

Nature lovers will have to visit the place which was declared as a protected area in 1999. The main attraction here is the proboscis monkey in which the male species sporting a pendulous nose, fat belly and thick white tail. One of the most important travel gear to bring along here is your binoculars. Visitors too may find other interesting animals such as the civet cats, clouded leopards, crocodiles, deers, elephants, flat-headed cats, giant squirrel, hornbills, macaques, marbled cats, orang utan and otters. Birdwatching is also a popular activity here too especially during the wet season from October to March.
