KOTA BELUD - SABAH

KOTA BELUD

EAST MALAYSIA

Visitors will find this small town rather interesting and cultural. Kota Belud is a well known tourist attraction which is located slightly less than eighty kilometers from the capital city of Sabah. The best time to visit this town is during the weekends since this quite town becomes very busy every Sunday when the open market, also known as tamu, takes place. Tourists will find the scene at this market rather special since this place is an important part of the social life of the local tribes who gather to exchange goods and as well as to exchange news and stories.

The farmers seen here are the famous Bajau horsemen who are known for their stunning jeweled costumes during ceremonial occasions. At the open markets, these horsemen become buffalo farmers and can be seen riding buffaloes to the section of the market where buffaloes are traded. The sight of farmers haggling all morning over the price of a buffalo calf is very common. Another famous attraction here is the tribal handicrafts and traditional clothing which are also being sold at this congested and colorful Sunday market. These items make really good souvenirs to take home.
