MENGKABONG WATER VILLAGE - SABAH

MENGKABONG WATER VILLAGE

EAST MALAYSIA

Traveling for more than half-an-hour along the dusty road from Kota Kinabalu will take you to a popular tourist attraction called the Mengkabong Water Village. Located near the quiet town of Tuaran, this place of interest in Sabah is a Bajau Laut, also commonly known as the Sea Bajau, settlement. These sea gypsies of Sabah lived on boats or in flimsy huts over the shallow waters. Tourists will find this water village rather unique as it is built on stilts bored into the seabed. These rows of fairly longish houses are linked to one another by plank walkways whereby the boats are anchored on the sides. Sampan or canoe are their common mode of transportation. This Bajau stilt village offers tourists a beautiful view.
