Semporna has become a
very famous marine tourism centre in Sabah offering
tourists excellent activities such as boating,
camping, diving and water skiing. This tourist area is no
longer the old fishing village it used to be as the Sabah state government has pumped in millions to
developed this coastal town and has since
transformed this town into one of the main places of
interest in the Sabah tourism map. One of the main reason
visitors really enjoy their stay here is that fresh
seafood can be easily bought off fishing boats and
also be brought back to the hotels to get it cooked.
A main place of interest here is the Pulau Bohey Dulang (Bohey
Dulang Island) which is a volcanic island used by
the Japanese as a pearl culture station.
Another tourist attraction
in Semporna is
the site where stone tools were recovered at Tingkayu, the dry bed of a prehistoric lake which
has amazed archaeologists for their quality and
workmanship. The discovery here predate similar
artifacts found in this region by about ten thousand
years. One of the best time to visit this Bajau town
is during the month of March when a colorful regatta
takes place. Semporna is also used a base for diving
and snorkeling at Pulau Sipadan and Pulau Mabul. A
good place to hang around is at the Dragon Inn and
Ocean Tourism Centre which has an aquarium, hotel,
restaurant and a souvenir shop. So use this travel
guide on Semporna to have a fun-filled vacation.
