Regarded as the only
one of its kind in Malaysia, the Sepilok Orang
Utan Sanctuary is a great place to spend the day
as visitors can observe man teaching apes to
climb in their natural habitat. This famous tourist
attraction is sometime called the Sepilok Orang
Utan Rehabilitation Centre. The rainforests in Sabah are some of the oldest in the world.
Exotic flora and fauna abound. Wild orchids of
every imaginable hue. Pitcher plants that gulp
down insects and flies. And of course, there's
the rafflesia, the largest flower in the world.
Jungle trekking here is an opportunity of a
lifetime to marvel at rare flora and fauna.

But the star of the
rainforest here is undoubtedly the orang utan
whereby these amazing captive animals are
retrained to cope with life in the jungle.
You will find them swinging through the forest
in Sepilok, the world's largest orang utan
sanctuary. Located about twenty five kilometers from Sandakan and spread over forty square kilometers, you will
witness the sight of orang utans roaming around
freely and visitors are allow a close-up view as
well. Orang utan is a Malay word meaning 'man
of the forest'. Visitors travel across the globe
to make their way to this famous place of
interest in Malaysia.
Sepilok is only a 15
minutes drive from the east coast town of Sandakan. In this sanctuary, orang utans that
have been abandoned by their mothers, or were
formerly in captivity, are rehabilitated until
fit enough to be returned to the wild. Although
some of these animals are released back into the
jungle, some orang utans still return regularly
to be fed. Watching
these charming and entertaining mammals during
feeding time is a sheer delight and these
adorable animals will posed for you anytime. The
best time to visit is during their daily rations
of bananas and milk around lunch time which
usually starts at ten in the morning. Tourists
will certainly enjoy the sight of orang utans
being fed from a platform located in the middle
of the forest. The view of these animals will
definitely be the highlight of tourists visiting
Borneo. Besides the orang utans, this famous
tourist area also have many other species of mammals and
birds but not only it still remains the best
place to see orang utan in Sabah but in the
whole Malaysia.
