From Kota Kinabalu
one can travel on the main highway by an express
bus passing through Papar, Bongawan and Kimanis
and reaching Beaufort before taking the train to
Tenom, which overall is a four-hour journey. Borneo's only rail
service links Kota Kinabalu at Tanjung Aru to
Tenom, a famous Murut area in Sabah. The railroad snakes along
the Padas River, giving passengers a spectacular
view of the Padas Gorge and it presents an
excellent photographing opportunity. The Padas River offers
a challenging experience to rafting enthusiasts
and adventure seekers and thus making it a
famous tourist attraction in Sabah.
The Muruts in Tenom
live in longhouses and are a generous,
hospitable people given to much merry making
with song and dance. They have traditionally
depended on shifting agriculture and hunting. A
major attraction in Tenom is the Tenom Orchid
Centre which has more than 600 species of
orchids. From Tenom, excursions to other Murut
settlements in the neighboring areas can be
arranged whereby tourists can view the daily
traditional life styles of the natives here
first hand. Tenom is one of the many places of
interest in Sabah that are worth exploring.
