TURTLE ISLANDS

EAST MALAYSIA

The Turtle Islands National Park (Pulau Penyu Naional Park) is actually made up of a group of eight islands found in the Sulu Sea. This famous tourist attraction in Sabah is located about forty kilometers north of Sandakan and among the larger islands here are the Pulau Bakungan Kechil, Pulau Gulisan and Pulau Selingaan. A boat trip to these famous islands will take no more than three hours from Sandakan.

To catch a glimpse of the Green and Hawksbill turtles, tourists can visit this area between the months of July to October. This is the time when the turtles come here to lay their eggs. The green turtles can be usually seen at Pulau Selingaan and Pulau Bakungan Kechil while the smaller hawksbill turtle prefers to lay its eggs at Pulau Gulisan. Turtle hatcheries are being built to safeguard the eggs from wild animals. Visitors who want to overnight, there are comfortable chalets on Pulau Selingaan.
