The famous Kuching town, nestled on the banks of the Sarawak River and as the capital city of Sarawak, is known to retain the old-world charm of its romantic past. The Kuching River is the focal point of the town and features a graceful, European-style esplanade known as the Kuching Waterfront with excellent views across to the Astana, a palace built by Rajah Charles Brooke and Fort Margherita which was built to defend against the pirates which has been converted to the Police Museum. This place is perfect for soaking up the sight and sounds of Sarawak's culture and it is full of handicrafts stores, restaurants and hawker stalls selling delicious local cuisine. With all its great tourists attractions, Kuching is a travelers' favorite travel destination in Malaysia.

 

For another perspective on the town, hire a boat and float down the river either by day or night whereby the sunset is fantastic and it is excellent for photographing. The narrow, bustling street near the river are crammed with ornate temples, markets, historic buildings and traditional Chinese shophouses selling local handicrafts. Kuching also lays claim to nine famous museums whereby many are within walking distance of each other and the more popular ones among visitors are the Sarawak Museum, Islamic Museum, Cat Museum, Chinese History Museum and Timber Museum.

 

For shopping in Kuching, tourists can go to Wisma Saberkas, Sarawak Plaza, Wisma Hopoh, Wisma Phoenix, Kuching Plaza, Main Bazaar and the Sunday Market. Another tourist attraction is the Tua Pek Kong Temple, the oldest place of worship for the Chinese while the Sarawak State Mosque is known for its gilded cupolas. To get to every corner of the town, get yourself a Kuching city map which are easily available in most book stores. Spending a day in Kuching is never enough, with its friendly people and interesting places of interest, exploring Kuching town could be the highlight of your vacation in Sarawak.
